This shawl was designed in support of St. Anne’s Church -- a historic church in Toronto, Canada, that was devastated by a church fire in June 2024. All profits from this shawl will go towards the church restoration fund.

This shawl is a celebration of light and hope triumphing over tragedy. “The light shines in the Darkness, and the Darkness cannot overcome it.” (John 1:5) Despite the fire, the community of St. Anne’s has come together in hope to continue their ministry and their work to support the Toronto arts community. Inspired loosely by the mosaic motifs on the back wall of the High Altar of the church, this shawl is my attempt to knit a tiny bit of good into the world.

For questions and support, please e-mail me at sarahdawnsdesigns@gmail.com

Pattern Notes:

This half-circle shawl is knit from the centre back out in five wedge sections. Each wedge section has one 'spine' stitch

between it. The edging of the shawl is done in garter stitch, with a garter stitch lower edge, as well.

This pattern uses a combination of written and charted instructions. The mesh sections are written instructions only, while the Fire Stitch Motif is both written and charted. This pattern also has an accessible large print option that is compatible with screen-reading software.

Materials Required:

Pattern uses 976 yards / 892 meters of lace weight yarn. Sample Shown in Dye-Version Merino Lace in the colourway "Windstorm". Sadly, Dye-Version yarns is, sadly, no longer in business -- for yarn substitutions I would suggest any lace weight merino yarn or a lace weight yarn without a substantial halo.

Notions:

*tapestry needle

Gauge For Pattern:

• 22 sts and 38 Rows = 4 inches (10 cm) square in stocking stitch after blocking

Please note that gauge is somewhat flexible for this pattern, though changes in gauge will change the appearance and/or size of the finished object. If you are a loose knitter, or are enlarging the pattern in any way, you may need more yarn.

  • long-tail caston
